History of the Pixie-Bob breed

In fact, it was an American breeder from Washington state, Carol Ann Brewer , who launched the breed in 1985. Indeed, this year, she adopted a spotted ginger kitten with a powerful build and a short tail. whom she named Keba. The owners told him that the father was none other than a pixie bob kittens, which gave birth to the legend.

However, Carol Ann Brewer already had a similar female, Maggie, with whom she mated Keba. In the litter, a kitten similar to its parents was born. The breeder named her Pixie . With a golden character and a wild appearance, Pixie seduced Carol Ann who decided to launch the breed. She found different males with similar characteristics and chose the name Pixie bob kittens, in homage to the founding cat. Bob comes from bobcat (lynx in English).

Carol Ann Brewer wrote the first standard of the breed in 1989. The legend of the bobcat as an origin obstructed the recognition of the breed by TICA, the international cat association, which refused hybridizations. It was therefore necessary to carry out genetic tests to prove the completely domestic origins of the kittens. In 1993, the Pixie-bob was accepted by the feline body without the possibility of competing in the championship, then in 1996, it received the title of new breed. It was in 1998 that it was recognized as a breed in its own right .

In France, it arrived in 1997, but LOOF, the French cat body, did not recognize it until 2002.

Many feline associations do not yet accept it, including the CFA (Cat fanciers' association) and the FIFé (Fédération Internationale Féline).

Did you know ? The Pixie Bob kittens is a rare cat in France , since the LOOF has recorded a total of only 223 short-haired and 110 medium-long haired subjects since 2003. In 2022, only 13 short-haired kittens were born and 7 to long fur, which represents 0.02% of purebred cats. They are therefore a far cry from the 177,349 Maine coons recorded over the past 20 years!

An ancient long-haired breed now popular in the United States is far from new to the Asian continent and Europe. The Siberian kittens for sale is sometimes referred to as simply the “Siberian Cat”.
